My new bathroom project.

The bathroom in our house was substantially as installed when the house was built in 1975. The coloured suite was outdated, and the wall tiles rather gave away the age of the bathroom. It was time for a change.

Besides this, the layout was such that should any part of the bathroom and its plumbing become faulty, replacement would have been impossible without major disruption. Another deciding factor was the soil pipe. It was fashionable at the time the house was built to put the soil stack within the building to preserve the outside appearance, and also to prevent freezing. This pipe was routed through the lounge and enclosed in a box  about a quarter of the way along the longest wall, and rather detracted from the appearance of the lounge.

We wanted the soil pipe moved outside, and this, combined with the age of the bathroom became the main reasons for a refit.

This photo was taken prior to starting work. The shower enclosure is made from two stud walls, and is positioned up to the end of the bath. There is a small, rather useless space between the left of the shower enclosure and the end wall of the bathroom. It was decided to fit a new 900 mm quadrant enclosure in the corner of the room, and leave the rest of the layout the same. This would give a useful space between the shower enclosure and the bath, and would also mean that each item could be removed and replaced without disturbing anything else.

I intended to carry out all the work myself, where possible, and the following pages show the progress of the work.
